The Great Handheld War – 3DS
With every year that passes comes bigger and better changes for technology. And for this year of 2011 there is no exception. The two contenders as always are Nintendo and Sony. With Nintendo releasing the 3DS back in March and Sony’s Vita coming out just around the corner, the stakes are high for theses two.
Nintendos twist on 3D gaming was a first for a handheld and a daring move, but was it to daring?
I will admit I was super excited to hear about this and that I thought it was a pretty good idea. Though sadly the 3DS has its drawbacks. For starters there’s the games at launch, the health risks, battery life, and price.
The concerning thing with the health risks are you that you will sometimes get headaches or even eye strain from playing it in 3D. And if you planing on getting this for your small kids, well you might wanna think twice. Children under 6 years of age are advise not to have this, mainly because of the 3D technology. It can be very harmful to their eyes causing some vision problems. Though Nintendo did think ahead and added parental controls involving a pin will allow parents to disable autostereoscopic effects. So parents if you still wanna get it for your kids just know that the feature is there and to be sure to use it. But if your still skeptical about it the American Optometric Association has assured parents that 3D gaming in moderation would not be harmful for children.
For the battery life Nintendo as stated that is going to be a whopping 3-5 hours of juice for 3DS games, 5-8 for regular DS games….. Yeah well that’s not the case here. At best there is only going to be 3 hours, 15 minutes and that’s with the low settings, mind you. That for me is the biggest disappointment. If your out on the go all the time and you’re not really near a plug then you might want to think twice before taking it with you especially if your on a long trip.
There were a decent amount of games out at launch, but… some just weren’t all that good. Sure there were a few food games, but just not enough in my book to back it up for the price its set at. Your gonna be looking at shelling out $250 bucks if you decided to get now, but there is some good news though. Come August 12 the price will be cut down to a staggering $170. Now that’s a pretty big price cut especially since it just came out not to long ago. Now why the sudden price cut?
Well Nintendo is putting the blame on the Gamecube. I know what your thinking. “What the heck…. There not even the same thing” Well if you want to find out more visit the link and it will go into more detail. (http://www.tomsguide.com/us/GameCube-3DS-e-Shop-Satoru-Iwata-Fils-Aime,news-12047.html)
Now for the features your going to be looking at quite a few of them. Theres the Activity Log, Augmented reality, Backward compatibility, Virtual Console service, StreetPass and SpotPass, Video content, Web browser, and Miis. All of that in one small device. Where the heck do they fit it all, huh?
So with all that is it enough to win this years war against the Sony Vita? Well its to soon say really. But be on the lookout for part two of my in-depth review where I will review the Vita and tell you what to expect.

Out for BLOOD!
Get out those remotes make sure you set your DVRs because a new episode of True Blood is out. This season is starting to heat up with new love and old interests, even freakier supernaturals that go bump in the night. As if you couldn’t handle vampires well know you have fairies (not the gay kind mind you), sexy werewolfs, shapeshifters, and werepanthers. Now I’ve heard of werewolfs but a werepanther is a new one for me. Only on True Blood can you get surprises around every turn. Well be sure to be on the look out for more True Blood every sunday only on HBO and HBO Go.
